Late Eastern Muzzleloader Help = Free Elk Steaks
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:21:16 PM »
I know, it's a crappy season   :dunno:

I was surprised by a mandatory vacation by the military to an undisclosed location and will get back with only a few days left for Eastern Muzzy, any elk for GMU's 130-142.

I understand what a crappy area to hunt this is for elk, I tried to tag out earlier in the NE but blew my chance(s) at a few bulls.  All I want is elk meat until next year when I'll be in the country to scout and do it in earnest.

I've been scouting a few weeks so I'm not asking for somebody to do the work for me, I have every BLM, DNR, NF map there is and know public lands - I just can't find the elk anywhere!  Well that's untrue, there's tons on the Turnbull NWR  :chuckle:

I wish I would have gone farther south into Almota (142) to scout before I had to leave, like I said, it was a "surprise vacation".

If anyone would like to extend a helping hand, they will have it filled with fresh elk meat in early December :cue:  As much as they want.

I can trade grid maps with dynamite bobcat and coyote hunting spots for those interested.

You guys rock, I love this forum.

Sorry to say but the few elk that are in the area are almost 100% private land dwellers. Even if you find them, your probably not going to get permission from landowners because them and their families hunt them.

Yeah, that's where I'm at for the moment.  I hit a dead end and was reaching out hoping to make a connection of sorts.  Not necessarily private land.  Thanks

Most recent intel I have on members of that herd was when I saw them first hand the evening of Tuesday, October 10th.  They were everywhere along the shoulder near the Salnave Rd exit along I90.  2 good 6x6's, and half a dozen other smaller bulls.  Couple dozen cows.

Normally I wouldn't provide such specifics on location, but I was only 1 of probably over 1,000 people that drove by and saw them - so no secret there  :chuckle:

Now, if you want to know if it was the north or south side of I90 ........ can't help ya there  :chuckle:

Thanks 'Pants, there are definitely plenty o' elk out there by Cheney and I heard that between Salnave and I-90 is a popular winter hangout for them.  It's kind of depressing having an any elk season that I'm going to have a tough time capitalizing with.
