2012 deer tag filled-lucky shot(pics added)
« on: November 01, 2012, 05:59:53 PM »
well not my largest buck but havent shot a deer the last 2 years in washington so I'm glad to have meat in the freezer and a tag thats full. not much of a story, spent 3 days hunting mulies in northeast washington with no luck. this was my second day hunting whitetail after mule deer season closed. spent my morning walking, sitting, rattling and more walking. jumped this guy and another larger buck about 2.5 miles in. saw both of them were legal in my binos (4pt minimum) as they were running along a hillside in brush and that was good enough for me. found one in my scope running broadside and shot, not knowing which one i was shooting at. watched them run another 50 yards and stop under a pine tree... then it looked like 1 of them laid down or fell over. still watching them in my scope, I saw the larger buck run off so I assumed i killed the smaller one. about 5 seconds later I saw the other buck start running in my scope, worried it was wounded I took a shot at all I could find in my scope, its flickering tail.. dropped it in its track. I later found out i didnt hit it at all with my first broadside shot but got lucky with a shot in the rear  :yike: thats a first for me. unfortunately, I did ruin some backstraps but still managed to get alot of meat of off him, so I am happy.

The picture is probably too big, try resizing to 800x600 and it should work.

Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Yes, a risky shot and not a first shot I'd ever take.. but already placing a shot on him.. i acted in the moment. anyways, thanks for the advice on resizing it bobcat.. got it figured out

When i was younger i was shooting at a whitetail doe. It was standing broadside and when i went to pull the trigger it turned and started to run. I actually shot it through its tail and hit it in the neck. It was the craziest shot i have ever seen.

Nice deer. You could have left out the details, the pics of the deer's junk, and simply wrote "my second shot wasn't the best angle, but it did the job."

Thanks finnman and bobcat that's what I was thinking  :dunno: thought I'd give some people a story. And everyone has their own views on this scenario. I'm glad I took another shot it filled my tag and got me meat

Once I wound an animal, or believe I've wounded one I take every safe possible shot there after to try to end it quickly and make sure I dont lose an animal.

I dont condone your first shot at a running deer (thats not to say I havent been guilty of similar), but the second shot I agree with given the situation you described.

Nice buck, and nice job getting it done.
