My first elk hunt was last weekend in the Winston Unit. Great country but so many roads and people.

We hiked for what seemed like hours only to run into more hunters.

We saw no elk. I'm assuming due to lack of experience in that unit and so many other hunters moving the elk.

Sounds like we went up to high and others had more luck down low.

Better luck next year!  I was looking forward to elk in my freezer.

Fresh meat. Learning the proper etiquette for hunting as I go.

I live on the opposite side of the hill (north) from Winston Creek on the Mossyrock side and there are lots of hunters around the unit.  Other than just plain luck, once you are past the first couple days of the season, you have to look to smaller clearings and pockets of timber where elk are likely to hide out and sleep.  There is plenty of sign & tracks, just a matter of being there when the elk are.

I'm still looking too.

I heard that Archery was only open for 1 day up there... My dads boss goes there every year and they had to leave cause DNR and Weyco shut the land down to hunting for the fire danger. So that is why there were so many bulls taken out this year.

Not true. They got at least 4 days this year.
Port Blakely was shut down before and during the season. Weyco shut down during the season and DNR did not shut down.

DNR land was open all season. We hunted the land up there, but not with much success

Ok I'm sorry!! When I was up there we were talking with a DNR guy who was checking Discover Passes and he said that it was shut down. I was just going by his word.
