Mossyrock or Randle for late season?
« on: November 12, 2012, 08:12:02 PM »
Anyone planning on hunting either unit for late elk. I can't decide which one to focus on. I know the Randle area somewhat, but know absolutely nothing about Mossyrock. I was hoping to check both out this year but spent the early season in the winston trying to fill a cow tag--what a joke!

Both will have lots of hunters due to muzzy and bow hunting it.  My advice would be neither.

My hunting group and I spent several days hunting/scouting each unit a few seasons ago. We saw more elk in the Randle unit than in Mossyrock. None of us took anything out of those units and as stated, there are plenty of hunters to go around.

I can tell you randle is packed during late season, tho i did manage to kill a cow in 09 with my bow in there by pure luck, my buddy also got one. We saw one heard the whole season, and it happened to cross the road in front of us so we trailed after. I would try mossyrock, i cant imagine there being as many people as in randle  :dunno:

The density of hunters in the Mossyrock Unit is outrageous!  At least Randle has a lot more public land so everyone spreads out. Good luck either place.

I've hunted Randle a few times. There were a lot of hunters. I was able to get away from the crowds, but never saw any elk.

The back part of Randle everyone knows how and where the elk migrate thru.  Last year locals had a truck, nonhunters with radio that sat on top of mnt. in packwood unit.  They could see the entire valley as elk came thru and radioed their buddies who were in two trucks below on the boundary rd.  Saw many hunters coming in from both ends.  My cousin got a cow but he used a boat to access a particular spot! :chuckle:
