Practice = no guard

Early season short sleeve = no guard

Late season bundled up with heavy clothing = guard to keep sleeves tight.

Men have a natural bend to their arm, so most guys don't need it.

If you have good form and are consistent, you should not need one.

That about sums it up for me too.

I use one to keep my coat sleeve out of the way.

By the way don't forget to practice with the coat that you're going to be hunting with and the armguard if you're going to use it to make sure it all works before you get out there and have An animal in front of you

I use one to keep the cold weather clothes out of the way, and even short sleeve to keep the bruising off my forearm. I am shooting an longbow and I get "bitten" more than I would like when I am to lazy to put one on for a quick arrow or two in the evening.

The under armour jacket I just picked up has a drawstring to tighten the material in the forearm, presumably to keep it out of your bow string.
