Deer from opening day (with pic this time)
« on: November 09, 2012, 01:38:58 PM »
Well on opening day I shot this chocolate horned 4x2 at about 4000 feet.  I was sitting up on our property over looking a valley and doing some glassing.  It is an extremely steep area with cliffs and such.  I was sitting on the end of a cliff with benches in between me and the top which is about 4300 feet.

While trying to stay warm at about 8am I hear some rocks above me move.  This is a bit dis-concerning as bears like to flip rocks and look for grubs up here.  I turn to see this guy standing about 30 yards up the hill.  He immediately snorts at me and jolts over a small hill into a natural drain and way down off the hill.  I run up and he stops behind some buck brush and looks back at me for about 30 seconds.  I am not going to shoot through brush so I wait him out and he moves down the hill another 60 yards and stops broadside quartering away.

I shoot and he is hit for sure but is meandering down the hill like he is trying to catch his breath.  Then, and this is the weirdest thing, he starts walking backward down the hill with his head down. It turns out the the bullet exited through his throat.  Not wanting to shoot him while he is facing me I wait for him to turn but as I shoot he stumbles and I hit him high on the back (see wound on back).  This did finish the job and he layed down about 130 yards from where I first saw him.  Done at 9am on opening day with a week in camp.  Awesome.  Not a bruiser, but man is the pepperoni stick from Double D meats in Mount Lake Terrace delicious.

That's a dandy of a buck.  Going to be some good back straps off that one...

That's a bruiser blacktail in my book.

Good work.  I read that you shot the buck at 4000 ft and I was like, "...that's a long shot?"

Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.
