fill the freezer
« on: November 13, 2012, 04:51:19 PM »
I had someone tell me I could use my archery tag to shoot any elk (cow)  and then head over to Idaho, purchase a cow tag and fill that tag the next day.

Anyone ever done this before?  I would like to fill my archery tag after thanksgiving.... Don't have a honey hole, and then I would love to drive over to Idaho and buy/harvest another cow.

If you have info or know of someone that is doing this, please let me know... We'll work together, I can drive.

Plus, any help can get you a couple of bags of Jerky too. I plan on jerking most of both animals.

Thanks,
-c

I would focus on finding a spot to hunt before counting on filling your elk tag. Sometimes crazy luck happens, but most won't get close enough to draw, let alone kill an elk.

I looked into going to ID about 2 weeks ago for their muzzleloader late season and their regs gave the cow/spike option. Unless they put out an addendum to their regs you could shoot cows then. Dunno.

This ole' guy made it sound as if everyone was doing it, he would hunt the areas near wintering for elk, (legal but still cheesy), knock a cow, then go over to Idaho where he said you could buy an over the counter tag for a non-res cow elk. (Idaho i guess doesnt hunt cows or they have a lot of tags er something???

I know its not a slam dunk, thats the next step, just wondering if anyone does it, how sucessful they are, any problems and concerns to avoid.

I don't want to be in a wrong place doing something wrong whether I know it or not...

I also see a place in Oregon where you can ? "hunt" ? longhorn cattle, keeping all the meat, hide, horns.  Sounds like a good way to fill the freezer however, I would be emabarassed to tell anyone.
