First buck - Thanks lokidog!
« on: November 20, 2012, 03:20:12 PM »
I got the chance to go up to Decatur Island and hunt with Lokidog.  boss .300 winmag and his daughter bugaboo25 were also up there hunting.  Lokidog and I headed out just after legal shooting light on Saturday morning, and about 2 minutes after leaving I saw a deer about 150 yards ahead of us.  After looking through his binoculars, he confirmed it was a nice buck.  I got to about 60 yards from him, and couldn't get any closer so I took the shot (I was using a smoothbore shotgun with slugs and only a bead).  I BARELY missed him, and he ran off.

Later in the day, we had gone onto some private property, and about 2 minutes after walking in we saw a deer jump and run away through a pocket of thick brush.  We quickly walked (almost a jog) around where we thought he would be coming out of the brush, and then I sat down and waited.  About 5 seconds later I saw antlers coming out of the brush, then a few steps later the buck stopped broadside at 35 yards.  I but the bead on him and then squeezed the trigger.  BOOM, and then he dropped in his tracks (I swear my heartbeat was louder than the gunshot at this point).  I had hit him in the neck just in front of the shoulders, and he was dead within a minute.  Got him back to Lokidog's house, where he was kind enough to get dirty for me while teaching me how to dress the deer  :chuckle: He also taught me how to skin and butcher most of the deer, and I was able to do a lot of the deer by myself!  Later that night, Lokidog made us all a FANTASTIC meal of raccoon sloppy joes!  Thank you to Lokidog for letting me come up there and hunt with him last weekend, he helped me make some great memories and stories as well as helped me fill my freezer!  It was also great meeting and staying with boss .300 winmag and his daughter.

Nice job....I'm glad everything worked out for you. A couple of things I would like to say is number one good for you for taking the time to show your appreciation. The offer you took up was a good one and it shows that you know that. Secondly...later in life when you are great hunter with many tropies on your wall remember the kindness and effort that was put forth on your behalf. If you get the chance to do the same then you must do so. Congrats again....I saw the pics earlier and it is a nice respectable deer.

Cool pic....hadn't seen that one....you really plugged him....no lost meat there!

Yep....like the extra pics. The as he lays pic is pretty cool.
