Three Clam Slam
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:35:13 PM »
not sure where to put this post so admins can move if needed.
I had a pretty decent year shooting my first ever bear and my first ever elk in the same year.  Also finished the season out with a doe on the last day i could hunt completing my three clam slam (sow, cow, doe).  :chuckle:
took the bear at 165yds with a muzzy and the deer was 150yds with muzzy also.  The cow was about 20yds with my 270wsm.  I'm pretty stoked after not getting anything last year and also being able to take two firsts in the same year.  Can't wait for next year!

That is a serious achievement. Got to tell us more of the back story. How did you manage to make it all happen? Lots of scouting for sure. What was last year like? Hoping to do this next year Lord willing.

That is a serious achievement. Got to tell us more of the back story. How did you manage to make it all happen? Lots of scouting for sure. What was last year like? Hoping to do this next year Lord willing.
to tell you the truth i didn't scout at all.  i went muzzy deer for the second year in a row and last year i didn't get anything but my partner did.  same this year.  I went east for a week deer hunting and probably put on close to 30miles deer hunting and finally ran into the bear.  it was both of our first bear kill and was pretty interesting walking up to it.  it was getting late and i wanted to wait til the next day to go up to it but he insisted.  i had one shot in the muzzy and all he had was a 38 with bird shot.  just what we needed was to piss off a wounded bear even more.  although when we got to it was deader than a doornail.  got a shot at a barely legal deer but missed.
back to the wet side for elk hunting.......opening weekend saw one cow but couldnt shoot cuz my cow tag wasn't good til tuesday.  i went to work on monday and took tuesday through friday off work.  the area i was going to was a bike/hike in area and saturday/sunday/tuesday/wednesday i probably put on at least 30 miles if not more.  i was sore.  i have never killed an elk so i was ready to shoot the first legal elk i had a tag for.  i was ready to go to another area and my buddy said to keep going there because they will eventually have to come out sometime.  I finally spotted some elk and according to google earth i spotted them at 1.2 miles away.  It took us about 30 minutes on the bikes to get to them and i came up right on top of them.  the wind was swirling and the first animal i spotted was a friggin spike like 15yds away and i thought oh great, the only elk i can't shoot, just my luck.  then i heard the whole herd get up so i moved forward some more and saw two cow heads looking at me like 20 yds away and i picked the bigger one and neck shot her.  my father in law had one of the tags too and he called me on the radio and he was on the lower road and said they were going to cross in front of him and he ended up getting one too.  they were both about 2.5 miles pack out which made for a long day/night.
the doe was my last day i had for late muzzy and i was trying to get a buck but it just didn't work out.  she was 150 yds uphill so i took her to end my season.
i had to buy a new freezer and still have a bunch of processing to do.  plan on canning a bunch of the doe meat.
hope next year i can get some male animals but had a great time and was a memorable season that i will probably never forget.
