new coyote bolt gun??
« on: December 01, 2012, 07:54:46 PM »
So ive come a cross a few rifles im thinking might be a fun long rang coyoty killer. First is a m70 win stealth II in 223wssm, next is a savage 111in 6.5x284, then a mark v in 270 weatherby. I know the cals are all uncommon and expensive to by factory loads.  I like the 223wssm idea with a 75gr amax but im unsure of the round count and throat shape of the rifle.the win is by far the cheapes but that in part to the others having way better scopes too. The weatherby is in need of being blued. The savage has a break on it which im not to king on do to hearing loss. I dont know which way I should go but I like all three rifles just not one really shines to me above the others.

Just came from my wifes Christmas party. A guy I was talking to has a 223wssm and said that's a darn right coyote killer. For whatever that's worth.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I confused why does it seem everyone is concerned with round counts on rifles?
The majority of rifles won't have over 2000 rounds put thru them in the lifetime. Unless you are a serious paper shooter or competition shooter.

The only rifle that had this throat problem to any extent was the 264 Mag. (Old School) Due to the fact it was loaded to achieve insane velocities and it did erode throats.

Is this the bane of all the new short mag's?

I'd pass on the 223WSSM as it is finicky to reload. Also the twist might not stabilize the 75.
And the 223WSSM can be hard on the throat, more so than most.
The 6.5-284 is the way to go. Lots of bullets to use to find a load the rifle likes for distance and an accurate cartridge right out of the gate.

If it isn't then float the barrel and bed the action. If those two don't fix it and you are dialed in as well as possible with the rounds, you need a barrel. Same things will fix a 70 accuracy problem but there's extra things to do with the m70 actions.

I would take the Savage and never look back.

There is very good aftermarket support for the Savage i.e.: Barrels, stocks, triggers, scope bases, etc. and with the ability to swap barrels and calibers in minutes it's a no brainer.

Factory ammo is going to be limited for any of those calibers if that's an issue. The muzzle brake on the Savage should be adjustable so that you can turn it on or off if that's an issue.

Any of them would work for what you're looking for but I would lean towards the 6.5x284. It's a more versatile caliber than either the 223 WSSM or the 270 Weatherby.

Has anyone had any experience with the savage adjustable break? Seems like a pretty sweet deal.

pretty low BC with that round, (223) what do you consider long range, without a decent range finder BDC on your scope for your specific chosen round, makes it pretty difficult to shoot far on a small yote.  if your just thinking a fast flat shooting gun, without all the bells, maybe a .243.  Hornady has a good factory bullet that shoots a 58 gr bullet at around 3700 fps, now thats flat. very common round, i have used it, they are great, and a good deer round with heavier loads.

Past 500yds is what im thinking. I have a 243 win, 223 rem, 30-30win, 338 win already. I shoot the 223, 243, and 338 out to 600yds and have put down a few coyotes with the 223 at 550 but its not a round I would pick for that seen as its dropping pretty fast in energy and speed. The 243 is a great round but ive blow some major holes with the 95gr noslers out of it and the 338 is just nasty with the 200 gr nosler.  I kind of want a deer gun to that isnt heavy like my 338 so the 6.5 might work a few jobs

That was my exact thought when I read the title.
