Lookin at getting a .22

I am thinking about getting a .22 for Dog-n-Cat and other small game hunting, and just all around cheap target shooting on those 'off-hunting' weekends. I've been really interested in the S&W M&P 15-22 as well as the Colt M4 .22LR. Any input from someone who may have one? Pro's & Con's on either...?

Unless you're really into the mall ninja tacticool stuff, IMO  (having had a 15-22) the novelty of an AR style .22 wears off quickly.

Get something bolt operated, so later you can go suppressed without all that action noise.

Get a real AR15 and get .22 conversion kit..... they dont work well, but they arent as wortless as an AR style .22

You're probably better off with a Ruger 10-22.  You'd get more gun for your money, have same or better aftermarket support, and have a rock solid reliable platform for hunting.

You could still mall ninja up a 10-22 or you could keep it more as the useable hunting configuration in its stock form.

I have never understood this "Mall Ninja" talk... Is this people's way of trashtalking rifles that look like AR's, cuz if thats the case, count me in as a Mall Ninja....  AR's are overpriced everywhere I go, and I'm not inclined enough to spend just under that to build one.

I don't know bout all you guys, but .223 is NOT cheap for target shooting... Compared to anything .22

.223 isn't cheap fortarget shooting, but if you are going to shoot yotes and cats on a consistent basis (i.e. start calling them) IMO you need a .223 to get them on the ground consistently.

Aside from the used market, I believe these are all decent weapons for the prices and are brand new.

I have a Ruger 10 22, and I love it. I was just really intrigued by the look, feel and performance of the M&P 15-22, is that what makes people Mall Ninja's? The way a rifle looks?

I also have a Ruger Mini 14. Which I REALLY love, but I dont like the feel of it, plus it's pretty heavy for its size.

Okay, so having read this, now your post has a different meaning than how I initially read it.  You already have a great .22 plinker/target/small game hunting rifle & a .223 for bigger stuff.  So you are wanting something more in the assault rifle look/style,  I would say just go with what you like and want, its your money, your toy, get what YOU will enjoy shooting/using.

I would say that the "Mall-Ninja" term, which is new to me, is exactly what you said, based on the look/style of the weapon and the caliber being a rimfire version/copy of the centerfire standard.   And, as with any other subject on here, you will get answers, reccomendations and opinions all across the scale...
 
As to the Mini-14, will it be coming up for sale at some point, since it sounds like you don't care too much for it?

Be it someone with a jeep jacked up all the way in the sky with the latest and greatest but never sees an ounce of dirt, or the ar-15 some kid had to go and put on a laser, a red dot, a hybrid scope setup, angled backup sights, a tactical flash light, and a suppressor just so he can shoot it at a range once a year. It's just a term for someone who buys the coolest accessories for their toys but doesn't actually use them.

You achieve mall ninja status when your AR style .22LR is pimped like you're an operator on Seal Team 6. 

You know...the guys that think tactical lights,reflex sights,and fore grips are neccessary for shooting pop cans.

If you're looking for performance a 10/22 is the platform to start with IMO.

I buy what I want regardless of what people may call me, that's just how I am, everyone is different. As for the 15-22, The one I was looking at is Camo, and of course, it's semi auto, I am a wetsider, so mostly everything I see, or call in, is gonna be closer than anything out east. It was my thought that a 15-22 Semi Auto should have no issues puttin down a Cat or a Yote. It's not like they're Lions and Wolves...

Now that this is more well explained.  I agree with Blacktail Sniper; buy what you want. 

As far as mall ninjas go, I don't have anything against it.  It's just that a class of modifications beyond a good stock, sights, and trigger are more for flash than any utility.  The AR-22s kind of fit in that class, but that would not keep me from buying and enjoying one.

Using a .22LR for Coyotes is gonna result in more wounded animals than dead ones.

It's funny how a single phone call can change everything..lol, I called my Dad about this very topic a few minutes ago. He builds AR's all the time, and I am always drooling when I go back home and see what he is up to with his collection. So i call tonight and apparently he bought a S&W 15-22 a few weeks back. He proceeded to tell me how it's a great rifle, fun to shoot and how he has changed alot of the stock parts over to some of his AR parts (i.e. 4 pound trigger and different grip etc).

So he asks why I want a 15-22, and I told him what I told you guys. He says, "I just got in a new lower receiver, if ya want it, it's yours, just go buy an upper receiver, Merry Xmas!"

So the story of the 15-22 has ended, caus he also told me I could have his 15-22 for my bday next month... Talk about a pretty sweet day, and an awesome dad!

Anyone know of a good upper for around $500? I was lookin at Rock River Arms... but just wondered if there was any others I should check out, I want to spend no more than 500-575, I can always get a really nice one later...
