Looks to me like you can either spelling of widgeon is accepted.

You looked wrong. 
There is only one correct English spelling and it's wigeon. 
Come on duckkillerclyde, it's Christmas for crying out loud! First off magnus100 and I do have it right. It's spelled either way. I guess I have mounted 100's of "Widgeons" for people and had it wrong this whole time.
