Porkies?

I was watching one of those alaska shows and a guy on on there was talking about porqupines being excellent eating, anyone ever try one?? I see the darn things all the time, can we even harvest them in this state?

i started a thread before asking about the legality of shooting them, and this seems to happen on a regular basis seems like. the answer is yes.  they are unclassified wildlife.  you can kill porcupines any time no bag limit.  as far as eating them, youll get mixed answers on this.  carpsniper is somebody you might want to talk to about hunting porkies, seems to know his stuff

I've never eaten one, but the name is French for "pig of the pines", suggesting decent table fare.

Huh i learn something new every day. Every one ive seen is moving at a snails pace, like a penned pig, makes sence they would be good.

Yes and No. Yes they are legal to shoot but no I have never tried one. I have a friend that has chowed down on them. There is a couple things to remember with them. It really depends on the time of year, if they are fit to eat. A spring and summer quill pig is going to be the best eating. The fall and winter ones not so much. It has to do with there diets. The spring and summer pigs are eating grass and alfalfa and wheat seedlings. Or any other thing that is green and growing. The fall and winter pigs start living in the trees and there diets switch to a lot of bark and that is when they taste like crap. "Or so I am told by a guy I trust" It all makes sense if you think about it. My buddy 264 who is a member on here and works for us. Is going to eat one this spring. Might have to do a video and a cooking show out of it I think I am at 37 for the year. Best in one night this year was 5. If you know how to hunt them and what to look for they are easy to find.
