Spokane area Cougar?
« on: September 15, 2008, 08:07:07 AM »
Anyone know if there are some cougar around the Spokane area? I heard the best time to hunt them was when there is a lot of snow on the ground...I assume that means they stick to higher elevations. Also, what is the best way to hunt them...just tracking or possbily using predator calls?

Where are you from? I've seen a bunch of your posts I guessing your totally new to the area. What do you consider close to spokane? Cougar are sprinkled around but I'd look NE for a better population saw some good sign up near loon lake a few years back but thats the closest I've seen cougar sign. Bobcat will be there too but you'll find them wherever there are decent populations of game birds, turkey, or bunnies. I shot one a few years back in unit 139 on the palouse river. Saw two others about a mile from there. I've seen many up in unit 121. Muleys are in the scab/sage country and up high in some areas NE. Whities are just about everywhere.

Snow = locating them fresh. That's all. Huge advantage... almost necessary.

They follow the deer, find the deer, and go uphill.

But you cant hunt them in 4 of the best units up north after rifle deer closes, unless you have a archery elk or deer tag you can hunt them till your season closes then its hound permit only, stupid
