$100 to Cabela's Spot-Hogg or Black Gold
« on: January 05, 2013, 11:39:14 AM »
Hey,

So I got a $100 gift card to Cabela's for Christmas. I either want to get the Black Gold Rush for $109, or the Spot-Hogg 5-pin Bullet Proof for $100. The price is close so it does not make a diffrance. Right now I am leaning to the Black Gold, but many of you guys know a lot more than I do. What do you think?

Thanks,

~Bow Boy

I myself would lean towards the spott-hogg. I think quality is fine one both but I like the pins a little better on the hogg myself.

I think the only thing the black gold has thats better than spot hogg is pin brightness, everything else goes to spot hogg. On the black golds ive owned (surge and rush) the pin guard wasnt square to the mounting bracket, they were tilted down and left. The spot hoggs are almost as bright, much tougher and are better quality to me. They are also perfectly square. Warranties are about the same, maybe an edge to Black Gold.

I've had a black gold 5 pin for three years and am disappointed with it.   I have broken the plastic cover that changes colors twice and now my fiber optics are drooping in that I can see the bright fiber optic below the black.  They sent me replacement covers both years I broke it for free,  I have tightened my fiber optics twice and they won't stay flat . I actually had to put a drop of super glue on each one to keep the optic up flat behind the black bar.  I hunt hard but am no way using my bow to any extreme, for only three years old I am disappointed with the quality. I'm already looking at a replacement.  Mike

I would go with Montana black gold rush. Been shooting one for the last couple years, has held up great and they have a great unconditional guarantee to back up there product. Spot Hogg has a great reputation, no doubt, probably can't go wrong with them either.

Does that spot Hogg site you are looking at have a bubble level, because from their website it sure doesn't look like it to me.

I've had the spot hogg seven deadly pins as well as a 5-pin black gold sight.  I gave the black gold sight to my buddy and we went elk hunting together last year.  He broke the 5th pin, which is plastic, with just a little fall.  The spot hogg sights are all metal and solid as a rock!

I've got a SDP on my Insanity and LOVE it.  I used my military discount and custom ordered it from SpotHog.  It's got graduating pins with my key color choices.  Super tough!

How did you like your Black Gold "Surge". I have been thinking about getting the 5 pin version.  I have. Spotty Hogg 5 pin wrapped and am thinking about replacing it.  Did you like the "inch wheel adjustment" did it work as advertised. This is the key feature that I am looking at and why I want to try something new.  Also I got the small pins on my Spot Hog and want bigger pins. Also am thinking the black gold with the inch wheel would be much easier to adjust.

Spot Hogg!  It is the ONLY sight that will grace any of my bows.  Heck, if a fumbling 300 pound guy like me can use a Spot Hogg to break a fall on the ice and still come out completely unscathed and dead on, it has got my vote for durability.  Even with as much hunting that I do in really heavy brush, I have never broken a pin on my Spot Hogg and have had the same one for 15-16 years.

The wheels for the micro adjust always come loose and make a loud buzz sound. And you cant tighten them enough to prevent this without moving the pin in the process. On the one I had I removed the wheels altogether and adjusted it normally. I now use spot hogg. They are a much better sight for the money. They are actually very easy to adjust. Once the pins are set they will not move. They are plenty bright also, I can see every one of my pins after legal shooting light.
