Where I was seeing the elk in 163 you would have a hard time getting permission to hunt.     :twocents:  There is a lot of land down there that is leased out.  The guys farming it might give you permission to hunt, but the actual land owners would have a big problem with that.  So just be careful.

Do you have a cow tag for this year?
Assuming you do; I have hunted there for 30 years on private land. The majority of 162 Dayton hosts the elk. The elk travel out of 162 a short distance into 163, but you have to get permission to hunt. Likely not going to happen. Broughton Land and Cattle Company own or lease the majority of the land in 163 and a large portion of 162. It is only open to their employee's, unless you were grandfathered in because you got permission in the 1990's. I know Dave at Broughton very well. Not even I can get permission. I drew the modern firearm general season cow tag in 2009, but their is no elk in 163 then. The modern deer hunters run them all back into 162. They don't come back until the snow forces them to in Dec. The late tag you are referring to is the one to get, but you have to know somebody. Deadman Outfitters have also moved into the area and are leasing land from the farmers, which has screwed up the area. You can pay $1895 to hunt, but that is BS for a cow. Lastly the windmill project killed the area, because Pacific Corp has the majority of windmills and 90% of their area is closed to hunting. The Puget Sound Energy portion is more open, but no elk hold up in those areas. They will travel across it, but they all head across the wheat fields into Broughton Land, which they are protected. Some travel all the way to Starbuck, which is even more closed up to hunting. If you have a tag, I can help you fill it on some private land. PM me if your intrested.

I wouldn't waste your time and money, until you get permission in the off season. There is only 1 land owner down there, who gives out permission to the public. I have never seen elk on his land, and I am over there nearly every other week. The elk are in the fields herded up on the Broughton Land. At least that is what I have seen over the years. The anterless deer tags are not helping the archery guys, as they push the elk further towards Starbuck. Our hunting party is likely going to retire from our annual traditon soon, due to the land getting posted up. The windmills closed up the majority of private land we hunt. Everything around it, which was once open to hunting is either leased out or posted no hunting. Sad, because my family has over 50 deer seasons of hunting down there. The goal was to hand it down to their kids and grand kids. Likely not going to happen....

I will be over there this week. I will PM you any info if things change.
