I dont know what the minimum is for the free hatchet, I sent in 100. Normally a little here and there when I can.

If you donate that much to the NRA right now, you get a free AR-15!

I got the same set with my donation.  I think it was $35 or more.  Hatchet is really nice, but the knife is a cheapo......that's not the point though. ;)

I got the same combo this last spring. Hoped to have it before I went to Alaska bear hunting but it didn't show up until the day I got home  :bash: :bash:

I like the hatchet and Knife, both very sharp and light weight for the back pack

That sucks Gasman. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality and sharpness. You are right.

why do places that take donations send out gifts? Wouldn't they have more money to put in on the things they are trying to fix if they didn't do that?  Makes no sense to me.  :twocents:

As an incentive for you to donate.  Hence the minimum donation.  I'm sure they don't pay much for them in bulk.  Even if they make $5 after expenses, it's $5 they wouldn't have had. ;)

A lot of them, like the NRA, have an option for "no gifts" to check.

In my experience; the organization asking for the donation, who is handing out gifts in return is not paying for the gifts. Likely donated from a vendor, who writes off the donation on their taxes. I deal with this all the time in my line of work.

A lot of companies will donate items such as these to a not-for-profit, such as RMEF, they can deduct these items on their company taxes/write them off as charitable giving.
If a company does not donate them , they will give them at a reduced rate.  they do make money off of them though.

Now, I donate without even thinking about it, but when I first donated, it was the incentive item that got me to donate - now I have donated for several years without gifts, so the gift paid forward 10+ fold.

It is smart marketing, a proven model.

I donate a guided trip most years. I am not to keen on to many groups. I do like the rmef even though they kind hit a nerve with me on there views of wolves.
