Turkey prospect?
« on: January 12, 2013, 06:33:14 PM »
Having moved from the NE to the Oly Peninsula within the last year I don't see the turkey survival anymore. How does the population look for the spring hunt?

Turkeys are on the winter areas with no unusual conditions at this time. The snow fall has been average to slightly above, The temperatures haven't been to severe, few days near zero but no below zero except a very few locations.

The big loss is the weather when the chicks are born. The last two springs have been wet with below average chick production.

The turkey population is very scattered but smaller groups.

Every winter I get a bachelor group of mature toms at my place, this is my barometer of the coming season.  The worst year ever was 9 and the best 51!!!  This year we have 11.  It isn't looking so hot for mature birds.  There is usually a big pile of jakes, but this is definitely the worst year ever for them here.

We have a decent number of hens, jennies, and young jakes, maybe two years from now will be better.
