Trapping license problems
« on: January 21, 2013, 04:41:59 PM »
Anyone else have problems buying their Trapping license because the seller cant find it? I was going to buy mine today since I finally have a few cages built and I spent like 20 minutes looking at the computer with the sales clerk and we couldn't find anywhere to be able to buy it. I believe there was another thread on here about this same problem but I searched and couldn't find it.

Worst case I could just drive to Montesano and get it Im sure but if I could just get it here at Amanda Park it would save me from having to drive 100 miles.

I had a problem when they went to the new licences system. Where you can buy them online instead of sending in to get them. I had to call WDFW and have them put me in the system.  :twocents: You may need to contact them and they will get you in the system.

I believe I am already in the system.  :dunno: The main thing was that could not figure out anywhere on the their computer where anybody could buy the trapping license. I may have to head to Aberdeen on wednesday so if I dont get anything figured out by then, I will just drive the rest of the way to Monte.

I believe you have to go through the Olympia Office to get your trapping license.

Ok, I found the thread that talked about and I believe DUGANDEER is correct. I am just not in their system yet. I will give them a call tomorrow and then drive there Wednesday if I have to.

Do not go to the olympia office to get your license. The very first time you get your license, the dealer needs to call the WDFW (I believe) to have them allow you to purchase the license. If you go to Olympia's main office, they will charge you a 100 admin fee or something along those lines. The clerk should be able to get the license available, once he calls the DFW retailer call line.

Have them look under "other" when buying it at a dealer. That should bring up the option of trapping license. They may also have to call Olympia to make sure you are in the system. I would not go to a WDFW office. If they can't figure it out at Amanda Park stop at the Dennis Company in Aberdeen. They should be able to get you going. I bought mine there. Amanda Park is a bad place to buy a license. I bought my deer tag there and they had a hard time with that.

Like Bruce said you have to call Olympia first to make sure it is in the system then you can go to a dealer and look under "other" when in the system.

Sounds like he has it fgured out, here's an off topic question: If I have held a trappers license in the past and have a copy of the old license then I should be able to get a license?

Well I just contacted WDFW and they said that in order for a trapper to get their first license and be entered into the system, you have to go to any place that sells licenses and visually show them your trapper education card and then they are legal to call WDFW and give them the Trapper education number and put you in the computers. WDFW told me that because they cant verify I am who I am, that is the reason you have to show your stuff to a license dealer. Once that gets done, you can go to any license dealer or go online and buy your trapping license like you would any other tag or license.  Hope that info helps other new trappers like myself.

Sounds like pretty much the same deal as a new hunter having to show a hunter education card to buy their first hunting license.

I was under the impression that if you held a trapper license before they started this trapper education requirement that you could get a license?

Yes, You are grandfathered in. They should have a record of your license in Olympia but if you have the old one that's a plus. They'll still probably have to call Olympia.
