Mec-Gar mags
« on: January 16, 2013, 11:26:26 PM »
anyone have any experience with mec-gar 1911 mags?  I want to pick up a couple of extra mags. I have a chip mccormick mag but have experienced failures to feed with it.  Looking to try something different. Thanks for any feedback!

I use  both mags you mentioned and haven't had any issues in 1911's that weren't related to the spring weight. Have you tried a slightly heavier spring to solve your feeding issues with the McCormick mags?

Mec Gar is all I use on 1911's.  The failure to feed your experiencing has a lot to do with the follower.  Most 1911 magazine followers have no support on the front thus causing the front of the bullet to tip donward and as the slide returns to battery it pushes the bullet down on the ramp, thus jamming.

Mec gar mags followers has a support on the front which prevents the downward motion of the bullet tip.

Some of the causes of jams on the 1911 are:  week mag spring, bad follower, ramp not smooth, dirty ramp from shooting lead bullets,  bullet type

I haven't tried a different spring. I'll look into that.

When the failure occurs, the slide stops about 1/4 in short of battery.  I can push it forward to seat it fully. But one failure to feed is one too many.

I can see on the ramp where the bullet appears to be hitting.  Maybe the ramp needs to be polished or otherwise attended to.

I'll order up a mec gar mag and see how it works.

Thanks for the help!!

Thanks Biggerhammer. I hadn't thought about the recoil spring.  Less than 1000 rounds through it but I guess I could try this as well. Inexpensive idea to test.  Thanks!
