Since you have decent upper body strength, and you'll be rolling around with a shooting bench, and or a porter/helper (which you're legally entitled to), I would look for a rifle that's fairly hefty, which, regardless of caliber, will help lower felt recoil.

  My thoughts exactly.  That is why I suggested the Vanguard.  It is heavy enough that you will hardly feel the recoil from a .270 Win.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

After shooting a 12 guage with slugs, any rifle caliber mentioned even up to the 300 weatherby will not kick as much. you will be happy with what ever you chose as far as kicking you. I used to hunt in Wisconsin as a kid and my dad started me out with a 12 guage break open action single shot with slugs and I will never shoot another one of those again !!! It sucked !! You should look for a caliber that you have a reliable source of inexpensive ammo in my opinion, most of them will do the job if you can place your shots well. Just find one that is comfortable for you and have fun !!!

Good Luck !!

Based upon what you have said, I would have the old 7mm Rem Mag on my short list. The 270 Win is a classic mule deer rifle. One of the new WSM's would be an excellent choice too.

I'd seriously look at a 270.
