I'm a day hunter for elk living over in the southeast corner of the state hunting the blues. I've been out a half a dozen times but have not been able to connect yet. I'm cow & spike hunting. I saw a 6xspike the first day & passed on a long shot but have not seen him sense. A couple of days ago I had a 5x5 at 34 yards & he had no idea I was in the area. That evening a 6x6 came over a ridge I was on at 22 yards. He had 6 cows a little lower on the hill & I thought they were going to follow him but circled down into the timber below & they went straight in. I followed them in and had another elk at 38 yards broadside. I could see everything but the head!!! I stepped to the side to get the head in view & it was a cow staring at me. When i could see her head she could see me & off she went. I should have held tight. Too many should haves & would haves!! I saw a big bull last night with 31 cows but they went up the far canyon wall into private land. I think I'll try a deep canyon Sunday. I'm busy tomorrow.
I'm 40 and elkless
Mule deer hunting is my main game.

With the full moon & heat the elk (where I am) have been shutting up real early (like 3 am) and don't start bugling till right before dark. I can't believe it's been so hot all season.
