Any suggestions
« on: September 23, 2008, 08:51:37 PM »
We were thinking of going either to Lake Roosevelt or to the area south of Mansfield where there are several lakes to try; ie. Lake Grimes, Bennett Lake, Jameson Lake, Lake Lenore. I've always wanted to fish these last lakes but never have traveled there to do so. Any information on them would be welcomed.

lenore...either the very south end or very north end(preffered IMO). leeches, buggers, chironomids, etc. large lahontan cutts. these are fantastic fish to catch, may be catch and release? not sure. best fished from a small boat or tube...no motors. may be better in the spring.

grimes lake can be verrryyyyyyy weedy...but the lahontans are monsters. fish slow and deep with leeches and that sort of thing. chironomids work, but i can't stand fishing them. there's a small launch...best fished from a boat, but it has a wierd season...best to check the reg's, might be closed till next year.

jameson has a wierd season too, and mostly is a put and take planter fish show.

not too sure about bennett lake.

pm me if you want some more specifics.

It has been awhile but I fished for the Lahotan cutts at Lenore and lenice.  I looked good doing it with my fly vest on, fly pole, barbless woolybugger, long line floating in the breeze.  I didn't catch crap.  Jumped in a 12' aluminum boat at blue lake, just down the road, and grabed my bi-mart eagleclaw and couldn't keep the bows of my pole and limited in no time.

Oh but the dreams of catching those Lahotan cutts........

no lahontans in lenice....and you need to find somebody to show you how it's done.
 :)
you can fish lenore with spinning gear...single barbless hooks...big mepps spinners or blue fox spinners will get it done too.
wade from shore...see them cruising and cast to them...their are no secrets...it is near-combat fishing.

i meant with the fly rod. it's not too terribly difficult at all to catch them with spinners.

Thanks guys. The lakes are closed until nest year wit the exception of Lenore which reopens on the 1st of Oct and closes on the 31st of Oct I believe.
Bennett might fall under the pond rules or it's not worth fishing at all. It's not listed in the fish and game book nor is it listed in Washington lakes site either.

Lenore is open March 1 through May 31st for catch and release. Then on June 1st through November 30 you can keep one fish if you want. My experiance is the fall fishing is great and not the "combat" fishing experienced in the spring. Single barbless hooks on spoons or spinners will work as well as the usual flyfishing patterns, buggers, damsel nymphs and about anything else that fish will eat. In the fall both ends, the popular spring spots, are shallow and terribly weedy but the middle access points are good. There a couple of closed areas (small areas that are marked and easy to ID .. look in the regs) to watch out for. In the fall it's not unusual to be by yourself or at the most see a couple of other boats. Lots of shallow water, 2 to 5 feet but deeper areas to work also. The fish will be on the shallow flats at times (3 feet) and will take your spinners there. Watch out for the wind as it can get rough. Wading is OK but even a small boat or tube is better just watch the wind. Good luck.
