Well i did it...
« on: February 05, 2013, 10:43:46 PM »
Well i traded the trusty 7.3l powerstroke in on an 04 6.0. I have mixed emotions on this deal that's for sure. I needed the crew cab for my family and found this mint truck with only 54k miles on it for 5k under blue book.

Anyone have any experience with the 6.0?

Nice truck.  Good luck?  Do some research on what has been done to the truck and then do what needs done still.  Lots of issues on 6.0, but can be modified and fixed. Great truck once issues are dealt with.  Best to leave it stock until egr and heads are fixed.   :twocents:

That's exactly my experience with my 2006 6.0 crew cab.  After 7k in repairs in the last 30 days of my warranty, I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.  Love the 2012 engine.  Night and day difference.

Our company has 5 ambulances with the 6 liter in them.  Two are junk...the biggest and heaviest.  Other 4 are awesome......no problems.  The two big /heavy rigs have had egr go out three times each with only 70,000 miles.   What does this mean....don't tow with them and you will love it.

Should have bought a dodge!!!

I just turned 172,000 miles on my 04' 6.0 Powerstroke. Love the truck/engine/ZF6spd.  Get a dealership to run an Oasis report on it so you have the maintenance history. That will tell you a lot about what may or may not have been repaired/serviced.  (knock on wood) My truck has been to the dealer service shop once. ONCE for a wiring loom recall for the injector circuit.  Change the engine oil/filter often and use one of the good synthetics. I'm runnind Delo400 since day one. You're not a diesel newbie so I'm guessing you know the other things to take care of. Don't expect the same fuel economy that your 7.3 got, but you will have more power. The Zoodad mod will get you 1mpg more on the freeway. The Donaldson air filter is a better flowing/filtering design than people think. Straight piping 4" is good for more torque and mpg. The ball joints WILL fail. Replace them all at once with greesable models. If you want to save the paint, replace those tube steps with the factory running boards and a good set of mud flaps. If you have the advanced security group option, don't push too hard on the key pad. There is an aftermarket block plate to install at the door handle as a theft deterant. Lock your tailgate. They get stolen a lot. The Bilstine shocks are your best option. The brake rotors are too small... Napa sells an aftermarket drilled/slotted rotor for front and rear that will outlast two/maybe three sets of factory replacements. I have 100,000 miles on my front rotors and they're still going strong. The AC condensor is very suseptible to a pressure washer. Be careful.  The only thing really throwing red flags is that those early years of the 6.0 had automatic transmission issues. If the recalls were implemented then not so much worry. There is a wealth of knowledge here: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums
