Im looking to hunt the north western portion of the state. I have no clue about archry hunting the state so any ideas on what it takes to hunt it. Sounds like a draw situation for deer but I love the country so looking forward to hunting it over th next yr or so.

Anyone hunted in SD? Basic info is appreciated

Never put in for that State. Its not considered a trophy deer state.

Let me know if you figure out South Dakota's hunting system...my father in law lives in Watertown, he's not a big deer hunter, but he'd go if I set something up...There system is not very user friendly.

For archery you just walk down to the local walmart and buy a deer tag.  You can actually shoot 2 bucks a year if you want.  The state is basically split in half by the missouri.  You have west river tags and east river tags.  Its been a little while since I looked but I believe you can shoot a deer on each side of the river.  West river tags you can shoot a muley or a whitetail.  Rifle tags you have to apply for and they have gotten harder to draw but not impossible like our state.  They are not considered a trophy mule deer state but it is definetly a sleeper state for muleys.  They shoot some studs and they also have a TON of deer! Also while not being known for muleys they are well known for STUD whitetails!  Freaking cheap too!  Gonna try and do 3 states next year by adding SD to montana and idaho.

:yeah:  Litterally took the words out of my mouth. Although i havent done this hunt yet, its on the " to do" list. And my research has been very similar to BLR's.  Just lining up the timing with hunting partners schedules is the only issue. May have to do it solo, if I wanna get it done.  :chuckle:

So if I read their site right, as a non resident, you have to wait until October to purchase?  And do you have to choose what unit specifically to hunt?
