Traditional Bow Builder
« on: February 16, 2013, 12:08:15 PM »
Looking to hook up and buy a traditional bow from a local maker in washington.  I've been a compound guy for years and wanna see my options.  Any referrals will be looked at.  Bow will be used primarily for elk and deer.  I'm not looking for any fancy woods or fine finishes...just a functional, powerful bow.

Right off the top of my head.  Brackenbury Bows in eastern Washington.  Cascade Archery?...used to be from Yakima or somewhere in central Washington.   J.D.Berry from the Spokane area.  There's a bunch of good bowyers in Oregon.... Blacktail Bows, Fox Archery, Wes Wallace, Alan Boice (Liberty Bows), to name just a few.

Many of these guys have a 6 month to 16 month waiting period.

Have you considered a used bow, lots of good quality custom bows for sale.  Not sure if I'm allowed to post another website on here....PM me if you're interested.

Check out pacific Yew Bows.  You may want to build one with him.  Jay is the son of Gen St. Charles.  A name all bow hunter should be familiar with.   Just sitting and talking to Jay is a great time and when you walk into his shop you will take a step back in time.

Jay built my boy he's first bow and he's helping me build a take-down.  He's shop is a walk in time and humble but the man is an artisan.

I have a friend who makes beautiful traditional bows...not in Washington but just over the border in Potlatch, Idaho.  He has a FB page, but I don't think he has a website.  Here the FB link. His business is Rustic Archer.  http://www.facebook.com/RusticArcher

Good guy, beautiful bows, and excellent prices!

I'll put in another vote for Wes Wallace in Oregon. I've had one of his longbows for years and in addition to being a fantastic weapon, it's very beautiful. He's great to deal with and incredibly talented. Sort of a protege of the late Jim Brackenbury.

I can recommend Jay as well.  My wife has one of his bows and took his bow making class.  Now I have a bow made by my wife.
