Odd fly fishing question

Has anyone ever used a leader to a size 6 hook and put a worm on it with floating line and drifted it?  Will that work? drifting with a fly pole?

Never done it or heard of it... But not sure why it wouldn't work.

I fished Beaver Lake Saturday and saw several guys doing just that.

I never saw it done before. I've always used a fly rod with flies.
But, it sure worked!

Yea I have done it before and it does work but it kind of defeats the purpose of "Fly" fishing. I did it fishing for sea run cutts on me of the canal rivers. It can be challenging keeping the worm on when trying to get your cast out there farther.

Why not just use a small float and a light spinning rod?

I did it as a little kid, but there are so many better or more efficient ways to fish.

That is one of the absolute best tricks for fishing smallish streams for cutthroat. Length of the fly rod lets you reach over weeds and cut banks and put bait right where it needs to be. Very natural presentation. Delivery is more like a soft swing than an actual cast.
Don't see any advantage to using this approach on lakes or larger streams where an actual cast is required though.

In lakes "mooching" weightless or lightly weighted worms works very well- but can be done just fine with a spinning rod. Though I could see a fly rod/line working as well with no real pluses over spinning (assuming you're not really casting).

When I'm fishing smaller creeks I love putting my ultra light spinning reel on a 9' rod. It gives you more control to get in tiny pockets of water. Especially when there is a dense canopy overhead and no room to cast a fly over your head.

Why not just use a small float and a light spinning rod?

I already use a  7'6 ultra light but i like the fact that fly fishing is more intence for me. Its like man vs fish . I would love to have a center pin set up for fishing the hunp.
