Benelli Nova last fall, so far got a pile of grouse but really itching  for a turkey 8). Bought a new call last month- the Haint from down n dirty calls. Gobbler call that's supposed to be great for henned up birds.

Just be careful with that gobbler call.  Just hen calling sucks in people trying to cut off birds or sneak up on what they think might be a hen with a gobbler in tow.  If you use a gobbler call, even more of a temptation to people.....just be safe.

will do. Most places are sparse for other hunters so that helps also. Idea is for the henned up ones that respond but don't come in. I'd never use it all the time, sparingly

The trick with those henned up gobblers is you have to learn how to focus on the lead hen and communicate with her in an effort to piss her off or raise her curiosity.  Curiosity and being pissed can sometimes result in dragging that gobbler to you, especially if it a less dominate gobbler in the area.

The big guy usually waits on hens to go to him, which is the way it normally is, until hens dry up from sitting on nests.  Where she goes, sometimes a lesser gobbler goes.  In many cases you'll have a group with one boss gobbler and a couple subordinates that display very little in fear of getting their butt kicked, moving along with a small group of hens...2-3.  The sub's purpose is to run off any other gobblers while the boss does his thing.

Get this hen interested or pissed and you bring them all in, although the big guy usually tries to direct the group when they start going where he doesn't want to.  Some lead hens can be pretty determined though, just like with our subspecies. :chuckle:

Basically things learned like that, come after years of messing with birds in different situations.  You start to get a feel for the lack of a better word, attitudes.  Some times just merely starting a conversation by responding to the hen and then mimicking every vocalization she makes just slightly louder each time, in a sense, trying to challenge her.  If nothing else you'll become more proficient in talking turkey much sooner.

Well said. It is fun playing the matching game with her too. Some times you win some times you don't.
