Early archery dates for elk
« on: March 01, 2013, 06:21:28 PM »
It is that time of year again to put in for some time off for elk season. As far as I can remember, the opener for elk is always the tuesday after labor day. That would make it the 3rd of September 2013. I don't believe the dates have been published from WDFW but how certain can I be that they'll keep this schedule?

Looks like the second week should be a little better than the first!

I am taking the second week off and crossing my fingers that half the state doesn't get shut down to fire danger like last year.

I will take five days and two weekends which, given our short crappy archery season, is almost the whole thing.

:yeah:.. but I'll be watching the weather and if 1st week is like 2010 (60's and rain) I'll be changing plans.

That's what I have always heard from the experts, like Chuck Adams, but most people on here seem to think later is better, even into October.    :dunno:

I've killed the most of my bulls early.  But, the best elk calling I have done has always been in October.

interesting how people focus on the pre-rut for whitetail but pay no attention to it for elk  :dunno:

any time in the elk woods with a tag is a great time to kill elk, october does get pretty..wild.. at times though

I don't mind the heat at all... but I do mind the "closed to all access due to extreme fire danger signs". :bash: Chuck Adams probably doesn't have that problem.  :dunno:

End of Sept..... way better vocals....but early season is pre-rut and have killed 90% of all our elk in the first 3 days. I love that folks wait till the second week.

u can get bulls to come in just as much in early sept.but majority are silent,my experience is best from sept 25-oct 5 prime time there. thats why most states archery seasons go to the end of sept

Hmm never had much luck early on. Its always way too hot and those big animals bed with in the first hour of light and quit bugling, what am I doing wrong  :dunno:

I will say the first week of october in the bumping, nile and little naches is freaking nuts.

I make it work because it is all we have but when we had the week of the 14th to 21st it was noticeably better.  I killed my bull on September 8th last year; he came to cow calls.

Back when it was October 1 thru 16th every year elk hunting was my favorite thing to do.  And we got to shoot big bulls in the Manastash :whoo:.  These days not so much.

You could go a whole season without some dingle berry trying to steal your elk or ruin your fun.  Yeah I'm going to say it again...I miss those days :chuckle:

We could have some of those days back if we got rid of most of the technology in bows now :yike:  :peep:

Arse wipes shoot all kinds of weapons.  I think lack of respect towards others and the entitlement mantality of today has more to do with it than technology.  And, in the past ten years I've seen more traditionalists acting disrespectful and entitled than techno-archery geeks.  Unless you are in the Winston during late archery.  Then it's the children of logging supply store owners. >:(

I think just about anyone who's spent time late in the Winston has one of those stories to tell.
