Someone educate me please, does the reed get used with the call?
What are the differences in the different calls on your site Jason?

A diaphragm (also referred to as a mouth call or reed) fits inside your upper palate.  It can be used for cow sounds and bull sounds.  In order to make bull sounds they are usually used with an amplifying tube (grunt tube, vacuum hose, etc..).

I also have custom hand turned calls that use an external reed for cow calls (also referred to as open reed).  These use a mylar reed, sloped tone board with an air channel and a barrel.

Ok, if I had one choice: should I be getting a reed, hand turned call, or the bugle tube?
I will be hunting in Eastern WA this year during modern firearm season.

Jason, Just started checking out you guy's youtube channel. Man its one of the best hunting related ones Ive came across. Keep up the good work. Gonna begin learning how to do calls for various animals soon as this is my first year into this new lifestyle. Cheers.

I will be hunting in Eastern WA this year during modern firearm season.

Hand turned or director. Either one is very easy to use and gives you the opportunity to communicate with the animals. A bugle won't do you allot of good in the rifle season, although you might hear some bugles it it's not very effective to do that late in the year. Phelps calls are very easy to use and very very consistent.

I agree a hand turned custom or the director (all plastic external) will be the easiest to learn and most effective during rifle.

You will most likely use the call to settle the herd or stop the elk for a shot.

Not during rifle season (unless you draw a special tag  )
