Powerstroke 7.3 owners
« on: March 24, 2013, 05:27:29 PM »
What are you guys running for tuners/programmers and mods specifically for towing?  I have 01 f350 with the 6637 air filter, 4" turbo back exhaust, red tube wastegate mod, tran mods, and the Edge evolution programmer with guages and egt probe.  Tow tune, performance and extreme.  I like it and it is not a tranny killer like the old ones.  I hear good things about DP tuners and others and am considering piggybacking a chip.  I want a better tow tune then the edge.  I pulled a 9000lb TT over blewitt snoq. and tiger summit and the tow tune is too weak.  My egts reached 1030degrees floored at 60mph.  I have room for more power to tow, 1200degrees would be ok I think.  Im looking at the 80 or 60 tow tune from DP.

I know a few people that had the dp tuners and werent happy with them. I strongly reccomend TS Performance. I had one on both my 7.3's. Get the TS 6 position, its 6 tunes. I would also reccomend looking up tony wildman and having it custom tuned, you will love it. On heavy tow i could pull 9000 As fast as i wanted to go. Ran about 1100 degrees.

Ya thats what Im looking for.  I know this truck has more in it than edges tow gives it.  Pathetic tow program.  The other two arent bad.  I can tow in the performance 80hp tune  but egts run too high for comfort.  Pulls like a train but i have to lift off throttle to manage egts below 1300.  Wil research TS tuner as well, Ive heard they are compatible with other companies like Tony.  DP isnt.   Bugle can you pull 9k up Blewitt or tiger at any speed with TS and which tune?  I was floored on Tiger at 58ishmph 20lbs boost and 1000egts.  My up pipes leak but I still set codes for boost at over 21psi.

I pulled 8000 up tiger at 75 in heavy tow, could have went more.. 26psi. That truck flat got it on. I just looked up on tony wildmans website and that tuner is only $475. Great deal and you tell him whats done to the truck already, and what you want it to do and he will set you up. Liftime free retunes also.

I have a 2000 f-350 with BD evolution chip, BD Trany.kit, BD torque converter, AFE intake. Something called a turbo fooler? More boost I think? All set up by Bethel automotive. I don't tow but it hauls my 3700lbs camper as fast you wanna go. Mileage is also improved. I would talk to bill at bethel. Good guy. Diesel  performance is what they do.

Whats it do to your mileage?
I bought a 99, 6 speed thinking it would be good on fuel and the thing only get 16, 12 with the camper on.
I have been thin king about a tuner for economy.

Where is Bethel Auto. located?  I have the trans. valve/accumulator mods and billet torq. conv. as well.  I need to order the boost fooler froms beans or sumthing but am waiting to see if new tune makes boost fooler obsolete.  What tran temps do you all see when pulling steep grades in tow?  Im around 200degrees mostly and engine oil around 205degrees.

My mods helped with mileage.  Air intake exhaust help and good economy tune will to.  I get 16city and 18 to 20 hgwy.  My camper didnt really change it much.  Weighed 2500lbs.  Mines an automatic tran.  Stock it ran 15/18.  So more power(alot) and little more mpgs.

Hey Mudman, I don't have the gauges you do, so can't tell you temps. These are close to 5 year old mods. And no problems tranny fluid looks and smells good.shifts like a Manuel. No ford slip. bethel auto. Is off hi way 16 toward Port Orchard.

Does this tuning have any effect on engine longevity?

I have the same thing and average 17-18 city, 19-20 freeway (and i don't *censored* foot drive it.  :chuckle:) Only mod is no cat and 4" all the way back. Do you have any mods done? Larger than stock tires? If your tires are larger you have to account for the difference. I have to add 8.3 per hundred miles.  :dunno:

I've got a 99 6spd and average 17mpg on my gauge. But im also running 35" tires. Don't know how far the tires throw off the gauge though.. I've been wanting to chip or program also.  Ill be following this thread.  I'm putting on a banks turbo back 4" exhaust this weekend

I think better air and exhaust only help and responsible tunes/chips wont hurt and maybe help engine life.  I do know if you get dumb/extreme you can hurt it many ways.  High egts will fry her, hpop and injectors can be overtaxed running too hot or bad tunes.  Mostly though your tranny in stock form will not last as long, guaranteed.  Guages are highly recommended if tuning.

Lifts and bigger tires will drop your mpg 1-3.  I have some good web links for mods if any ones interested.http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/7pt3/Mods.html  http://www.thedieselstop.com/forums/f47/changing-atf-7-3l-powerstroke-engine-4r100-automatic-transmission-198641/

Few things I'd like to comment on here....

First... I wouldn't suggest DP Tuner for a few reasons. First, I don't trust their tunes, I've seen a few motors open up with their tuning. Second, you pay for the chip, per tune and per reburn which is just silly now a days.

I would suggest you go with a TS based chip like some have said here. I had a Tony Wildman chip in my 95 and loved it. Mudman, FYI, you can't stack tuners. Adding a ts chip to your truck with the Edge programming on there will do nothing. The TS will override the programming of the Edge and the only gain you will see is the difference between crappy Edge tuning and much better Custom tunes from whomever on your TS chip.

First things before any tuner comes into play should be air intake, exhaust and gauges... At the very least, an EGT gauge to keep an eye on your engine temps. You can run 1200* all day but over 1250* for extended periods of time is not recommended.

Talk to the tuner you plan to buy from, call them up and talk about the options, most can tune out the overboost code anymore so no need for a boost fooler or boost annihilator. (All a boost fooler does is regulate what the PCM sees for boost numbers to a number set below 23-24psi where it then throws an overboost code. It doesn't change the boost that you are actually making.)

Some tuners I would call are TW, Swamps diesel, Beans Diesel, Gearhead Automotive...

Also, don't buy a chip for fuel economy... You will be disappointed. Fuel economy is dependent on your truck being mechanically sound, no lift and big tires, maintenance is key, and your driving style.

Hopefully that helps a little bit. I'm on my 4th 7.3 so I guess I have a thing for them.....

I didnt think I would stack.  I have the edge with the monitor so I can put it on stock and run my chip while reading all the pcm gauge inputs, and egt with the probe it came with.  Full gauge was bang for buck and why I bought the edge.  I know custom tunes are way better, and ya TS seems more prudent.
