Springfield Jr. Kitchen Table Gunsmithing
« on: March 27, 2013, 09:57:52 AM »
I remodeled an old Springfield Jr. 22 LR. It was actually made by Page Firearms. They made them from 1928 to 1938. The gun wasn't worth much so it was good practice for some new gunsmithing skills. I blued the receiver using Birchwood Casey Bluing kit. I took an older Ruger 10/22 stock and modified it to fit the Springfield Jr. receiver and barrel. I also used the Brownell's Acraglass GEL kit to do glass bedding and pillar bedding. After much fine sanding, a coat of gray primer, three coats of red enamel, and three coats of clear enamel it looks pretty good. I still have to do some final hand rubbing with Rotten Stone powder. I'm also working on a dark stained, hardwood end cap. Here's some pictures of the project. Haven't shot it yet to see if it's a straight shooter.

I'm not a particularly good shot, especially standing up and using iron sights. However, today I shot some Super Colibri through this little Springfield Jr. 22 and managed to hit a narrow painters stir stick. The kind they give away at the paint store that was wedged between a rock about 30 feet away. What luck I thought. So I aimed at it again and hit it again. I couldn't believe it; it's a good little shooter as well as being bright red. It's a back yard or range gun only, very light, and with the thicker Ruger 10/22 stock feels great in your hands. It will eventually go to my Grandson and he should enjoy it.
