Smith and Wesson Shield

I think we have talked about them awhile ago but wanted to see who all is shooting one. Plus what you guys think of them. I have not shot one yet so I wanted to get some feed back.

Back in the 80's I heard that their quality was becoming inferior. And I think I heard deliberately too. My son bought a S&W a year or two ago. The star on the cylinder had a chip on it. He bought it brand new. I got the run around from Cabelas and S&W. They didn't want to listen to me or take an email with scanned photos of the defect. It was kind of like S&W can do no wrong just who are you? Well the fact of the matter is I am me and I know what I"m talking about. I've never liked them since the 80's and the very first brand new S&W in my house was defective. With a name like theirs they need to be able to back up their reputation. They failed miserably with me.

Sad to hear that. I have a few smiths and never had any problems.

I played with one at a gun shop a few months ago and its seemed very nice.  The only issue is that I am a lefty and I couldnt manipulate the mag release with my ring finger like I can do on Glocks and 1911s.  I eneded up buying a Sig 938 and love it.

I have shot the shield and M&P compact, both in .40 and would take the compact any day over the shield.  Get 3 more rounds in the standard mag, and to me it just feels like it fits better in the hand.  The best part about the compact is the ability to run full sized mags in it as well (just like glock), with the grip sleeve or not, you still can get 12rds in a compact, which is nice.  Also the shield, in .40, because of the smaller grip/frame, its definitely a little on the snappy side.  Might be more tame in 9mm, but I couldn't speak to that.

Quality wise, its a smith.  Great gun, will last a long time.  Just size wise its not for me.

We picked up a 9mm shield for my mom, I love it and wouldn't mind getting one in a 40 for myself. They are extremely thin, I'm not a big guy but even then the grip is a little less comfortable being so thin but not uncomfortable by any means. It shoots great and is the most concealable firearm we have, being so thin I'd pack it everywhere. I haven't shot it enough to give you too much feedback on reliablity etc. My suggestion is just get your hands on one and see how you think it feels.

Great gun. I have the 40 shield. Had its since dec and love it. I have about 700 rounds thru it so far without a hiccup. It has become my take anywhere gun. I'm a big guy at 6-3 280 and it feels good in my big hands.
I had shot a friends 40 shield before I got mine so there was no wondering how I'd like it. 9 or 40 can't go wrong. 9's bait tamer I'm sure. But friends don't let friends shoot 9's.
You should search the old shield thread. Lots of argument over 9 and 40. My arms and hands are big. So my shot to shot times arnt much different between the two rounds. Which was the big argument.

LOL I don't need to get into that argument  40 will always win for me. With todays loads for a 9mm it's still a better choice then not being armed

I wish the guy had a 40 in stock but he has 1 9mm and I have a gun to trade. So I am just thinking if I want to get the 9 or wait for a 40.

When i tested out the .40 i every once and while i would accidently hit the mag release when shooting. I had to consciously think to not hit it actually. Ive since read that this is a problem with the .40 but not so much with the 9mm.

Interesting for sure. One thing I did note was how small the release button was on the 9. I think it's for guys with bigger hands to help keep the button from getting hit. Did not have the 40 to compare to but thanks for that. I will look into that when I have one in my hands.

I have the 9, since September. Been a nice CCW, had a few fte's along the way but overall I'm happy with it. Best thing is the trigger compared to all the other ultra compact 9's I tried out. I prefer how the m&p compact shoots but wanted single stack.

Thanks guys. I went into to do the trade and he sold both the ones he had got in I told him to give me a yell when he gets one of the 40's in.
