Mark V 300 Weatherby
« on: October 08, 2008, 10:38:03 AM »
Guys,

I'm always in the market for new guns and was approached today by a guy at work selling a mark V 300 Weatherby.  Don't know anything about it, never shot a weatherby.  Its a synthetic stock, made in Japan 300 weatherby mark V.  What do you think its worth?  Good gun?

Once you shoot a weatherby you will never own another gun.  I own a Weatherby Mark V .270 with the cherry stock.  Smoothest, flattest gun I've ever shot.  I would never sell that gun unless you offered me enough money to buy a small country, and even then I might ask for a palace  ;)

I also own a Weatherby Vanguard .338.  Not as smooth as the Mark V but above adn beyond better then 90% of the competitors.

How much is he asking for the Mark V?

i never really hear anything bad about weatherby. definately have a few on my wish list.

smdaves dad got one when they were having some sort of deal where you ended up getting the rifle for almost free or something like that.

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.

He wants $600 bucks with just under 40 rounds of ammo.  No scope but does come with rings.  What do you think?  Decent deal or pass?

If the gun is in good shape, write that check before he changes his mind.

I have sold three of  the mk V in good codition for between 600 and 800 bucks.  without a scope.  the ammo is about $80.00 if it is factory weatherby.   Great gun not a bad price.  i would see if you could get it down to $500.
good luck.

I was thinking of offering around $500 to start.  We'll see what happens.  Don't really need a 300 Weatherby as I already have a 300 WSM that shoots well and not a ton smaller than the Weatherby but I'm always looking for a new gun.  Thanks guys.

I believe I own that very same rifle. .300 wby.Weathermark Alaskan. Synthetic stock, Electroless nickle finish. Mark v bolt.

I bought it brand new fron John Welcher 16 years ago. I believe I paid $799.00 + tax way back then. Probably would be $900-$1100 now. I would buy it if I were you.

Amazing cartridge and a great rifle. Took a spike bull in Oregon a few years back at 538 yards. I think the ammo is rediculously expensive so I started hand loading for mine. I was able to match Weatherby published velocities using Reloader 22 powder.

Hope you buy it!

Wazzu,

I had a Mark V in 300 Weatherby Mag.  It is a genuine elk killing cartridge and the Mark V is a great action.  One issue I had though was the high cost of ammunition.  Remington does offer a 180 grain core-lokt that is considerably less expensive than competing brands.  Cost is around $25 for a box of twenty.  I killed two bulls with the Remington ammo and both were quick kills.  Then I got married.  Had a kid.  Ran out of money...but that's another story.  Wish I still had that rifle.

What Wapitihunter said, only I shoot a load that I worked up using IMR 7828. It's a killing machine!

Wazzu, do you ReLoad your own bullets?  Usually Weatherby Ammo calls for a premium.  I guess all ammo is going that way though...
