A little help with SQUID Fishing from Piers
« on: May 02, 2013, 05:52:23 AM »
I am located on Whidbey Island and I will be looking to get into squid fishing within the next few months. I have already identified the type of tackle I need to get. However, I am not sure on where is good to go. Last fall I looked into piers on Whidbey and most are closed at night. So my questions are
1) Does anyone know where a lit pier is to go on
2) When is the best time of year to go
3) Is it worth going in the norther Puget Sound or do I have to go to the southern part.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated

I am no expert but I believe squid fishing is a winter event.  I've never seen anyone catching squid this time of year.
The Edmonds' pier is popular and I've seen a few caught at Clinton and on the other side at Mukilteo.

Yea. Im actually not even in the country at the moment. But Im just trying to get everything in line to go when I get the chance. I heard more were caught in the winter. But I am due back in the summer and figured once i get settled it will be time to go. What time of year is best?

the months to go are like oct through december i think, abc deli mart in des moines has the absolute best squid jigs, not to sound racist but drust drive by any lit pier in those months and if you see orientals out there then the squid are in
my grandpa always said "if it aint broke dont fix it"

It’s not racist, just a fact – look for hordes of Asian women on the pier and you will know the squid are in.  The women are quite aggressive in taking the best spots (and pushing you out).

I’ve never had much success at it; a Japanese friend of mine tells me that white people just can’t catch squid (no racism there  :chuckle:).   But I just won’t push my way into the crowds.

The squid run from about November to the beginning of March. Some population lives in the sound all year, but you're probably not going to have much luck now.
