Northern Pikeminnow (Squawfish) Fishing
« on: May 04, 2013, 10:43:18 PM »
I was thinking for out and trying to see if i cant catch some pike minnows (squawfish) and was wonder if anyone knew what type of bait to use or any descent areas for fish for them from the bank. Not wanting any ones hot spot just not a fish that i have gone out to fish or target just all ways caught them by mistake. Any advise would help thank you.

Go to priest and slip bobber with little lime green jig with a chunk of nightcrawler, or just plain nightcrawler should work.

I've caught tons that way, and walleye.

There are some great spots down the gorge. White and yellow grubs and chicken livers work well.

chicken liver is best bait, followed by crickets and worms.

Crickets really? I tryed chicken liver but couldnt keep it on the hook. Is it better to fish for them at night like cat fish or can you catch them at all times of the day or is it better later on as the water worms up and dose it matter if the water level of the river is high or low. I went out on Saturday and fished by vernita bridge from the bank all day trying just about everything i could think of and not one bite all day. The water was high and moving fast and didnt know if that could be the problem.

Believe it or not-Albertsons fried chicken, just a piece of the skin. A guy that makes a living each year catching them claims it is best. I haven't tried it but I use frozen chicken for crab bait and it works better than any fish or fish parts. I buy whole fryers and slice off the legs and filet the breast off the rest goes in the freezer for crab bait.
A smart dog will bring 2 beverages to save a trip to the fridge!

Not sure if it is still on here but last year...year before...one of the site members did a nice long thread regarding his season. He made some money, spent a lot of time doing it, but don't know how his season ended. I'll look aroun and see if I can find the thread.

Here it is....thought I remember it being longer...
