Fly fishing bobber/ strike indicator

Some guys said i was using to big of a bobber so I did this and it worked way better.

Are you tying that into your fly line?  I usually use a small piece of yarn and tie it into my leader.  I've also used a corkie with two little pieces of toothpick.  The yarn is easier to cast with.

Yeah instead of tying that into your fly line, (try to undo those knots man you will thank me later), run that corky up the leader and either knot your leader around it, or stick a toothpick in it to keep in place. I also have run rubber bands through corkies and that works really well. Easy to adjust and doesn't slip hardly at all.

You can also get these indicators called Thingamabobbers and they half hitch on your leader, don't slip easily and float like a cork.

okay thanks for the advice. I am trying to get evverything right so I catch more fish lol. I dont use a tippet because I havent had time to run and get some. I will soon though.

Don't worry about getting fancy, any leader material works fine. straight shot of 6# maxima or whatever you have laying around will work fine. Even just use whatever you are using on your spinning rods. Just make sure to set the indicator on the leader, not the fly line

there is a thing called a thingamabobber that fastens to your leader without removing your hook or sinker.  i am sure you could find it on youtube.  they are all i use.  mike w

Small corkies work well. Bring extra toothpicks.

okay. Do cheap flys work? I seen some at Dennis Compay.  I can buy flys for 49 cents. I have seen 5 dollor flys at a few places. whats the differances between them?

Quality.

$5 seems excessive unless they're big ones or something. Should be able to get good quality flies for $1-2 ea.

Don't bother with cheap dry flies, they won't float worth a hoot.  You can get away with cheap nymphs, but they typically won't last as long as better quality flies.  I wouldn't even think of paying 5 bucks a fly, that's way too high.

Have you thought about buying the stuff and tying your own?

Yeah I have. I  plan on buying a fly tying kit but havent seen one around Aberdeen area. Next time Im up in  cabelas I am going to look for one.

Warning!  Tying your own is worse than reloading and building your own traditional arrows.  You will end up with boxes of animal parts, hooks, threads, and all sorts of other cool stuff.   It is very addicting. 

Take a look on Cabelas web site,  You can get some flies there depending on what you want.  Being you are just starting out it really won't hurt to have some cheap flies that you can lose.  There are countless flies hanging from branches on the OP from me.  Come June there will be more

What flies do you plan to start tying?  You may find it better to just buy the miscellaneous tools & pieces.  I bought a kit and with in a week was starting over.

I didn't buy mine as a kit.  I bought all of the tools, and then some materials for the flies I wanted to start with.  Cabela's isn't bad, but you can probably find better sources.

  you can find a lot of flytying stuff on the internet.  dry flies require better materials and precise sizing due to hook size.  wet flies dont need to be so picky.  roadkill is good stuff, always carry a plastic bag and knife in your car.  have fun.  mike w

Deer hair is very buoyant. So is elk hair. The shorter the better. You've got to salt or tan the skin so it doesn't rot.  Birds are tough. Wild birds the feathers are usually too beat up IMO. Necks are usually cheap enough till you go hardcore into it and start tying dry flies with Metz necks or something like that.

Find a someone that bird hunts, and have them save you some pheasant feathers, some Hungarian Partridge, some mallard flank, some filoplumes from pheasants.  A hare's ear with and without a partridge soft hackle is quite possible the most versatile fly you'll find.

  Pretty much the go to fly on the OP.  I was to take one dry fly this is the one.  Lots of variations.
