jeeeez...turkey hunting really slows down come May ...
« on: May 19, 2013, 01:02:24 PM »
So did everyone bag up or give up  :dunno: :chuckle: I always wondered what it would be like if they opened the season toward the end of April ...Do you think it would still be as easy to shoot the heck out of them or would it save a lot of gobblers ....

Where I been hunting they won't answer squat and if they do it's followed by a little yelp or two froma hen lurking around and off they go. Once these birds have even one hen in eye sight, they shutdown. I think they're evolving to become monogamous????

Had a nice tom on thursday pitch down and strut into 60 from me just to turn around and walk off while his bearded hen fed around my decoy for 20 min! :dunno:  Went back in there this morning and struck another tom only to have the bearded lady tail me across the drainage.  Bird was in his strut zone and I finally got him to break after 40 min.  He got about 70 out and she starts yapping from his strut zone! :bash:  I had a yelping contest with her for a while and at one point thought I had her started my way but when he started gobbling at her she turned right around and they both walked off  :bash:  I should have shot her on thursday and I would have owned that tom today!!!!!  I usually love may hunting but this year if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all! -Karl

I think I talked to you Thursday at the restaurant. My wife served you and I talked to you for a minute coming out of the bathroom.

Yes sir that was me. Small world.  That was a dang tasty breakfast.  There was a guy parked at the gate today with a coyote madness sticker. Team maybe next time?

The truck had a zillah middle school honor roll sticker on it as well.  We had to be home for a birthday party at one.

Sounds like you guys are hunting some high pressured birds ....maybe leave them alone until the last week and see if that changes your luck ...or beat on some doors and find some new spots ...Last year we hit it just perfect at the end of the season ...seems like everytime we called they were running toward us ...Turkeys are moody suckers and the mood changes daily ....good luck

From what my buddies told me they were out three days not a single gobble. I was out 45 minutes and nailed one. He did not talk however. he was silent. After I got my bird I tried to help my friends and I saw three toms and not one would answer a call.

Its public land in gdale, everything is high pressure.  However these birds are a 6 mile bike ride so I doubt they have been messed with much.  Just got waylaid by a nasty old hen.  He's a smart old 3 year old but I will get him.  99% of the fun is the cat and mouse game.  If they came running in every time it wouldn't be much fun.  I have him figured out.  I will be in his strut zone come fly down time on Saturday. That is if I can't make it down to miss another bear! :chuckle:
