Shad for bait?
« on: May 21, 2013, 08:26:06 AM »
A guy asked me what I was going to do with the shad I caught this weekend and I told him sturgeon bait.  He tells me they changed the law 2 years ago and now you can't use them :yike:  sounds like bs to me and I couldnt find anything in the regs.  Can someone set me straight b4 I go use these shad please?

I looked through the regs and couldn't find anything. I thought that there was a rule where you couldn't use sport caught fish, such as salmon, for bait but I can't seem to find that either. Was thinking that was what the person was confused about but maybe that was another made up rule.

You can use legally retained fish as bait. The only rules that I am aware of that talk about bait are the one that states you cannot use herring, salmon, or halibut for anything other than human consumption or fishing bait.

Wonder if this is what people are thinking about.

Bait:  Anything that attracts fish by scent or flavor is considered bait, whether it’s a live worm, fish eggs, chicken livers, or an artificial device dipped in fish-attracting scent. It’s important to know that live fish are not allowed as bait in Washington sport fishing.

From this page.

It was a talked about rule change that never happened.
Was supposed be to cut down on the oversize fishing.
The rule was never adopted.
Shad gills are killer for keeper size--don't know why.
Whole shad for oversize.
It's not true that I am good for nothing---I can be used as a bad example!!
