300 blk subsonic reloading questions
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:27:41 AM »
Good morning everyone!

I just recently bought some Harvester 208gr  A-Max subsonic ammunition from silencerco that I really like.  I reload but have never reloaded subsonic.  I have browsed the internet and found some great info, but I wanted to check on here with all of you.  I want to reload the 208 gr A-Max.  Does anyone have any experience with this or recommendations?  Thanks.

Check out Leatherhead Bullets out of Idaho.  They make a 198gr and 240gr coated bullet that is cheap and perfect for Subsonic.  They won't lead your barrel and are very accurate.  I have loaded thousands and thousands in my competition pistols and have shot them in my buddies 300blk.  They sell a ton of these bullets just for subsonic .300.  Call them up and talk to them about it.

First question is whether you intend to shoot these from an AR, or some sort of single shot or bolt gun? Load data, particularly powder choice, will vary between the two.

Do you have a suppressor to shoot these through?

It's also worth pointing out (you may already know) that subsonic 300 Blk is not a great hunting round, unless you choose a bullet specifically designed for subsonic use. Most commercial 30 cal rifle bullets don't do much other than pencil through at subsonic speeds.

Thanks for the responses.

I will give them a call and talk to them.

I also intend to use the subsonic rounds in a 16" bolt with a suppressor.

What powders do you guys use?

Accurate 1680.  Kinda hard to find at times since the round is so popular right now.

In a bolt action, where you don't need lots of gas to cycle an AR action, use a fast pistol/shotgun powder. These loads are much quieter than using 1680 or one of the other powders that work in ARs. For your use, my favorite powder is Bullseye, but lots of people like Trailboss too. Pretty much any pistol powder can work, but faster is better for quiet loads.

Remember to work down to a subsonic load, don't work up.

Check out Hodgdon's load data. They have a great online load guide.

I used a lot of H110 and H4198 in my 300 Whisper.

Those work well in a semi-auto, but are louder than faster powders in a bolt gun.
