Yes that is salt, the cub lays in it and flattens it all out, leaving his scent behind

It is a wallow, small seep that stays wet year-round. The pic is from September 19, 2012, he was working three cows for the morning at the wallow

I think someone needs to tell that little spike elk that it's not September yet... He's ready to go, red rocket and everything....
