I lived at the Ringold fish hatchery when I was little, and I remember there were lots of pheasants along
the river, and a bit further upstream it was pretty good deer hunting.  That's all I remember...it was
back in the early 70's

Basin City appears to be in the middle of the GMU, does anyone know what that part of the state is like? Google Earth shows mixed farmland/dessert.

It is a lot of farmland, but there is patches of public hunting land.  You can go on the Fish and Wildlife website and look up the land and get directions to the parking lots to the areas. I have seen lots of deer tracks in those areas, but I was out bird hunting so I didn't pay much attention to the deer.

thanks for the info, do you know how "busy" it is? ie how many hunters usually tackle it?

There are some huge MD bucks in the Ringold area, but they are no secret to the locals.  After the first gun shots the deer head for the Benton County side which is the Hanford Reservation.  Early ML and late ML are your best bets but even then you better have a boat or horses to get out off the beaten path.  By the way it is shotgun only for modern rifle.  This late in the game I doubt you will get permission from some of the surrounding land owners but who knows I could be wrong.  Don't know if your from the West side of not but I honestly wouldn't make the drive with the price of fuel the opportunities aren't that great there are much better places closer.
