Finally...some chrome!
« on: June 24, 2013, 11:28:07 AM »
I fished the lower Columbia this weekend with my buddy (I and member here) ScottCRB and his girlfriend. Two of my brothers were fishing in their own boats with their friends as well. We had our own hogline going for the weekend. Fishing was decent, between 3 boats we had over 20 takedowns. Our hookup ratio wasn't great though, only 3 fish bonked, 2 nates released. Lots of driveby's and too many longline releases! I managed to get a nice keeper in the midteen's on Sunday. After the brutal springer season this year I am exstatic to put one in the box! I've been blanked on 6 days prior to this weekend. Our action came in 25'-35' with wobblers, though we did have a couple hits on bait wrapped quikfish. A boat drifted by us fighting a fish for quite a ways down river, on their way back they hoisted up a mid to upper 30's clipped pig! It was a football shaped brute for sure! All in all fun weekend!

Normally we catch a few sockeyes incidentally in the lower river while targeting kings and steelies during the June season. Haven't heard of many being caught this year. This last weekend we were fishing in deeper water than we have the last few years. The sockeyes seem to run right up on shore through the lower river in 6-15'. I hope to head out and try for some below Wanapum Dam in a few weeks when they make it up there. They are among the best salmon I've ever eaten.

If they open it. Last I checked they haven't said that it is going to be open for sockeye other than the Hanford reach below Priest Rapids.  Unless I'm reading the regs wrong.

I haven't checked if there will be an opener yet, just kings at this point. I hope there are enough to open it, its a fun fishery.
