remington 870 wingmaster question
« on: October 17, 2008, 08:06:30 AM »
about 8 years ago my dad bought me an 870 wingmaster 20 guage, so my question is are the barrels on the wingmaster have a built in choke??? because theres no choke tube in it and no threads that i can see to thread one in.

I know my buddy has an older wingmaster that has a fixed full choke on his 12 ga. I dont know the production dates or if they still make them like that, but to answer your question yes some wingmasters have fixed chokes

I can't imagine an 8 year old wingmaster having a fixed choke.  Was the gun purchased brand new?  You may want to shine a light down the barrel.... if memory serves me the rem chokes are threaded at the bottom, meaning the threads aren't going to be right at the end of the muzzle.  They'll be down a ways; 1-2".

Also.... if it is fixed choke it should be marked with the choke designation down near where the guage and chamber length are stamped on the barrel.

Check the barrel down near where it connects to the reciever.  There should be a choke designation... full, mod, imp cyl stamped on to 1 side or the other.

Ya know... I think even the tubed barrels are mark as suck.  They say something like Rem Choke.  Also, I really think you'd be able to see the threads with a light or even feel by stickin your pinky down the barrel.  Worse case scenario, get the serial # and give Rem a call.

I have an old 870 and it is a modified choke.  Yours may be the same.

so it has mod stamped on the barrel and it was made in 1969 according to remington so i think it has a modified style barrel.

It is a great gun.  Perfect pheasant and grouse gun.

I love those old 870 wingmaster's.   I have had a couple and still  have an 1100 that was made about the same time, I love the scroll engraving on the stock, that's a great gun.  If it is Mod. Choke I wouldn't be concerned about shooting Steel through it especially if it is a few shots a year.  If you are worried you can pick up a replacement barrel pretty easily.
