looking for a outfitter for the Dayton
« on: July 08, 2013, 08:19:12 PM »
Myself, and two of my buddies have been drawn for the rifle elk tag, we normally hunt on our own, but I figure that since non of us have ever hunter in the blues, and we may never again, I should check into some outfitters.
Don't need any frills, just someone that knows the areas.

Dave Waldron. Western Life Outfitters. MtnCook on here.

" In today's instant gratification society, more and more pressure revolves around success and the measurement of one's prowess as a hunter by inches on a score chart or field photos produced on social media. Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

I don't believe Dave has any territory in the dayton, but I could be wrong. I'm sure he will know if someone does though.

The Dayton unit is pretty much a noncommercial unit with no outfitter concession on a normal basis like Western Life Outfitters have in the east/west wenaha and tucannon units. There are outfitter permits given out on some occasions in the Dayton for specific hunts like the gov tag hunts. I am sure there are some under the table guides that may contact you that could help you out but may not necessarily be legal biz but thats up to you. Dave may have more to add to this but this is what i know. Good luck, you have a good tag and with some scouting and info gathering you could kill a  big bull. nwhunter

DAYTON  is a closed area to outfitting.  Dave from western life can haul out your meat however.

I talked with Bigdaddy last night.  In the past the USFS had given me verbal permission to pack meat only in the Dayton unit.  That permission came as the result of some meat lost by un prepared hunters.  This year I asked for a Temporary Permit to pack meat only in the Dayton Unit.  The request was denied so I will not be packing meat on a verbal approval.
My permit is not worth putting in jeopardy for $500.

Like nwhunter indicated there have been a few temporary permits issued in the past.  They were for the Mossback bunch in the past. Another temp permit this year.

Use caution in making connections with lesser known individuals that have history guiding in the Dayton.  Their track record in completing their obligations is not good.

Mtncook Thanks for the conversation,  you seem very knowledgeable I wish I had drawn the Taconnon or Wenaha, so we could be hunting a big bull this fall together.
Were planning a number of scouting trips, and as much as I would be willing to invest in an outfitter to help me on this possibly once in a lifetime hunt, I'm am good with gathering info from all you that are willing to share, and from what I have heard, this is going to be a great hunt, I am totally jacked, I have hunted elk for a long time and have yet to kill a nice bull, which just adds to the anticipation of opening morning.

no outfitters allowed in Dayton. Previously that provision was loop hole through a USFS special use permit( shouldn't say loop hole because it was clearly legal.)  but that was most likely lost due to the outcry over the  Agnew bull killing.

I am not sure if I am reading this right.  but the past two years a permit has been issued to the mossback crew.
