salt blocks for trail cams
« on: July 16, 2013, 11:43:39 AM »
I will be setting up my trail cams and am thinking about putting some salt blocks out.  Which are the best salt blocks to use?

Lots of threads on this but I will just say that I like the 50 lb bags of salt with selenium. Often cheaper then the blocks and lasts longer.  :twocents:

Your a bit late for this year. The animals need for salt greatly diminishes as summer goes on. Usually by late July pictures are all but nonexistent over salt alone. I use bags of trace mineral salt though.

I just use a 50lb block of white salt and they love it. Does wash away into the ground with rain like loose salt does. The deer and elk in my area hit the salt clear through October. I put a deer block out to but they like the salt more.

The need in my area on the deer side of it has already dropped off greatly . My cams avg 1000 to 1400 pics from may to early July .. Now some cams are down to 200-300 pics. Elk seem to hit them longer. I use 50lb trace bags with SE

I read an article that said to stay away from selenium because it can, if enough is consumed, be toxic to deer and elk.  I don't know if it's true just something I read, I now by just salt with trace minerals only and it seems to work great.

Tm block for me. Elk love it. I think as the year goes on they don't necessarily come to the spot for the salt but to see what animals have been there and it gets them used to coming to that spot.
Team nubby!
