Stilly,

I suggested the rage as he said he lives in Seattle and cant shoot at home. If you are more than 200 yards away at a gun club clay rage it would be hard for somebody to do something stupid. Just watch the dog and move slowly closer to the shooting line. It works for me and has worked for just about everybody I know that trains. We have our own range but the idea is the same.
