pistol scope???
« on: July 24, 2013, 10:10:26 PM »
Looking for some suggestions on a decent 4x pistol scope, I've got a $200 budget to play with. I looked at a couple at Bob's yesterday and was really surprised at the difference between the $100 scope which I think was a Bushnell and the $200 Nikon. The Nikon was sweet but before I pull the trigger is there anything else in my price range I should consider? :dunno:

I have variable powers on all my hunting handguns. I run burris and leupold.

Contender 30-30, 14 inch barrel.

I will primarily just be hunting blacktails with it and of the 5 or 6 blackies I've taken in the past with rifle/pistol, none were shot at over 80 yards so I don't think I'll need anything more the 4x and I figured with my limited funds I would get a little more bang for my buck with a fixed power over variable power scope.

First, I would recommend you look at a used Leupold or a Burris (get for around 200 or less), lifetime warrenty and fast turn around if it is sent in for warranty work.  4x is pretty rough to shoot offhand with a pistol.  I don't know how you hunt blacktail, but a ski pole/shooting sticks or something might be a benefit to have with you.  I go back and forth between 2X and 4X scopes and neither is perfect for me.  I think a good 1-4x would be optimum on a contender.  I have run 2X, 3X, 4X, and 5X scopes on different barrels on mine.  I put a 4x on my .22 pistol not long ago and practice with.  It definitely helps.

Nikon makes a decent scope, but I have heard of customer service problems with warranty work (3rd hand could be a rumor).
