Mica Peak/Mt Spokane
« on: July 30, 2013, 01:25:22 PM »
I'm a Marine and moved to Nine Mile area last year.  Tried my first season bow hunting up around Collville/Curlew area last year without much luck.  Saw lots of sign but no deer.  Hoping to find something a little coser to home this year so hopefully I can get out more often.

Does anyone have any input on the Mica Peak/Mt Spokane area out there? I did a search and most of the information our there was a few years old.  Just wondering if it's worth it to start from scratch in and around Mica Peak/IEP land or if I should head back up north again.  Not looking for secrets, just an overall impresion on if these areas hold WT or Mulies in decent numbers.  Not looking for trophy, just want some meat on the table.

There are deer there.  There are people hunting deer there.  The wolves have moved in as of at least last year.  Not sure how the deer still are???

I can give you lots of info as those are the areas I have scouted, had cameras going, and hunted exclusively for the last 5 years. If you wanna PM me I'll see what I can do to help you out.

I've hunted the Sherman Creek area (unit 101) for the last 4 years and there are definitely deer there. It's an any deer area and open for 35 days. You can actually hunt the pre rut, rut and post rut. I have passed up numerous 3 and 4 point bucks and countless does. Getting on an old skid road and rattling and grunting mixed in with some doe bleats works well at times or you can tree stand it over bait. Good luck and shoot straight.

p.s. Thank you for your service!

Mica peak and mt Spokane have some good Whitetail areas open to the public. Mica will require more hiking as it is closed to motorized access for the majority of public ground. Both units hold good numbers of whiteys. Some dnr land in both units recently went to a no shooting zone but archery hunting will still be allowed there may want to look into that also. Mostly whiteys in both areas although mica peak and surrounding areas do have a population of muleys. More so as you go south.

There is lots of deer up in theColville area, question would be how and when were u hunting them? on the ground, walking or treestand? using calls, scents or bait? There really isnt a terrible place to deer hunt from Spokane to Canada

theres some good hunting right in your back yard! just north of you between 9mile falls and springdale, west of deer park, get online and check out some state land back in there and start scouting, and you can be home for a late breakfast

Spokane GMU 124 and Huckleberry 121 are the biggest deer producing units in the state. Herds are down from historic levels but are rebuilding. There are fair numbers of deer in all the NE units, down some in numbers but rebuilding.

Thanks alot for all of the input.  Looks like Mica Peak is a definite possiblty for bow hunting this year. Last year was my first season and I moslty just walked and stalked.  I don't have a tree stand so I'll probably just do the same this year, except hopefuly with better results. I'm always willing to listen and definitely welcome any other feedback or input from anyone else who has experience in these GMU's.

Thanks again for the PM's and posts.  Great site with great folks.

Ill tell u right now if your trying to sneak around on the ground for a whitey with a bow..you will struggle. Some of the most seasoned whitey guys I know have trouble getting a whitey on the ground bowhunting Your best bet will be to build homemade ground blinds and hunt out of them...whiteys can see on the ground VERY well and if your not hidden trying to draw a bow on a buck is almost impossible without the perfect set up.
