Any info on GMU 172 Mountainview??
« on: August 03, 2013, 10:59:39 AM »
Drew a muzzy buck tag for mountain view. Have searched on here for info and havent had much luck. Anyone hunt this unit before? First year putting in for buck category. Was hoping to build pts for Dayton or Tucacannon. Threw in mt view as 4th choice. What the heck, right? Never guessed i would get drawn w 1 pt. long story short, i usually hunt 149 prescott. Is 172 worth the extra drive or what? Thanks for any help.

172 is mostly private land. There is a little bit of state land on top but most of it is down in the hell hole.

There is alot of public land in the mt view. I was over there on a muzzy bull hunt last year around the same time frame. I was in there for 8 days and hunted my but off. I saw exactly zero deer. You would be wasting your time in my opinion.

Yeah, Mt View is big, steep tough and mostly public.  Deer are not real obvious.  Some down by the river.
Wish I could earn a living hunting!

Thanks for the info. Im not afraid to hunt hard in steep nasty stuff. I just dont want to kill myself for a 18" 3x2. Planning a weekend of scouting soon. Is there public land on the Grande Ronde river ?

If you're willing to backpack go down into Menatchee trail/creek.  There are good places to camp by the creek.  At one location there was a nice, apparently seldom used campsite where there were some complex ridgelines and rolls not much higher than the creek.  You'll need to drop at least 1000' from the road/trailhead and probably about 2 miles down.  Not really sure of elevation/distance been too long.  In the past the trailhead has been monopolized by a huge wall tent that says something like "Skunk Hollow Boys" or something.  Just blow by it, they don't own the area.

Drew a mountain veiw bear tag this year and saw probably around twenty deer in five days, at least half of them bucks and two looked like they would be nice ones.  Rent the wenatchee creek gaurd station if you can get it and hunt the trail that runs the ridges behind the horse corral.

Ya its in the nf.  Their are better places to bear hunt we saw a couple bears and could never close the gap more than 660yds.  Canyon wall to canyon wall.  Shouldve saved my points for a more desirable unit.

The area is mostly private down low. There is a good chunk of forest service on top. 4oo cattle company used to let you hunt for a steep fee. There are some nice bucks in there. The white tail are lower and the mule deer are higher.

email this guy...Bob.Dice@dfw.wa.gov

Ask about getting the 4-0 land acquisition map and the details about hunting it. There are deer on it and alot in places.
